About the teacher
Judit Tóth-Pócs is a fiber artist and art teacher. She lives and works in Kecskemét, Hungary, with her family.
She has been involved in felting since 1992. From jewelry design to clothing, spatial sculptures, spatial to wall textiles, she deals with several areas of textile production.
From the beginning, her work was characterized by experimentation, the focus of which is the spatial development of the felt. She also owes her international success to this. She regularly teaches at both foreign and Hungarian symposia and forums.
She regularly participate in both international and Hungarian exhibitions with her works. She is a member of the Workshop Art Association, the Kecskemét Artists' Association (KKK) and the National Association of Hungarian Artists (MAOE).
« The interesting thing about my felt sculptures lies in the fact that the individual space elements are connected to each other without sewing. I use the traditional felt-making process, I make my objects by hand without the help of machines. In addition to spatiality, my other main experimental area is combining and rubbing felt together with various foreign materials.
I have developed the combination of wool with sequined, metallic fiber textiles, which completely transcends the original matte material, giving it a unique metallic effect, while and the characteristics of the wool are also not lost. »
Felt has many good properties, such as sound and heat insulation, flexibility, fire and abrasion resistance, but due to its matte surface, it absorbs light. I wanted to solve this with a material that reflects light. This contrast effect and the play of light and shadow are characteristic of my works in recent years.
« I like the freedom of felt in the shapes and colors as well. Colours can be used, mixed and washed into eachother, just like by water-colouring.
The different coloured layers are interweaving eachother and they create new colours around themselfs. I like to originate order from chaos, to arrange the tangle fibres into a whole under my hands. I like to incorporate different materilas and rubbing them together, give a feeling as they since ever would have belonged together. »

Detailed program
Day 1 : Hat with folded ornament
Morning 9am-1pm and afternoon 2:30pm-5:30pm:
In this course we will make a classic asymmetrical hat reminiscent of the 1920s.
One side of the hat is made exciting by a protruding, folded geometric shape.
I will show you different templates to achieve different shapes. Many variations can be made as desired.
You can play with the colors on this ornament, which will pop out nicely from the basic color of the hat.
You can achieve the finest effect with 16 Micron wool, but if it's not at hand, 19 Micron wool will also do.
I recommend this course for beginners and advanced alike.
Learning objectives of this sequence:
The basics of hat design
How to draw and enlarge a hat template
Application of a hollow folded form as a decorative element
Basic felting techniques
Color design and blendig
The right fulling method
Hat shaping
Day 2 : Men's Flat Cap
Morning 9am-1pm and afternoon 2:30pm-5:30pm:
Tired of ordinary, colorless and boring men's caps ? You don't know what to do with your felt waste accumulated over the years ? Make a cap for yourself or your partner!
In this course we will make a flat men's cap, which is actually unisex, I like to wear it too.
For the inner layer, we will use an industrial pre-felt, which we will combine with Australian merino wool rovings of different shades, with a fiber thickness of 16-19 microns.
For the patterning of the hat, we recycle felt pieces cut from our previous works. In addition to their colors, these patterns also bulge out plastically, giving the cap an interesting surface.
The cavalcade of colors is softened with a layer of Chiffon 3.5 silk, which will also hold the pattern in place.
The basic shape of the cap is relatively simple, but we will spend a lot of time shaping it before we achieve the desired end result.
For this, it is important that the quality and quantity of the material is appropriate, so you will also need a scale. It is also very important that you use an industrial pre-felt of the right thickness.
It is always beneficial if you have a hat block of the right size, but if you don't have one, you can also shape the hat on your own head.
You can finish the inside of the cap with a 3-4 cm wide Grosgrain ribbon. I use a sewing machine, but if you don't have one, you can also sew the ribbon in by hand. This will not be part of the course, but I will send you a separate video about it.
I recommend this course for beginners and advanced alike.
Learning objectives of this sequence:
The basics of hat design
Basic felting techniques
Special surface design by recycling felt scraps
Making Nuno-felt using Chiffon 3.5 silk
Color design and blendig
The right fulling method
Hat shaping
Sewing Grosgrain ribbon into the cap
Day 3 : Personal work day
The studio remains open in free access during this day without teaching
Day 4 : Bohemian double sided reversible cap
Morning 9am-1pm and afternoon 2:30pm-5:30pm:
During this workshop, we’re going to make a lightweight cap that works well for almost everyone and is bohemian enough to be worn on weekdays. It's a double-sided, reversible design that fits in a small space, making it convenient for travel as well. The basic template can be varied as required, longer or shorter, wider or narrower shapes can be created.
The lightness of the cap is given by the pierced pattern. Pongé 05 silk covers the wool on both sides, inside and out, so we can achieve two color effects at the same time, so a hat can be worn in two ways.
In fact, it’s a pierced, nunofelted light but warm headdress. A hat block is not absolutely necessary, because after fulling you can easily shape the hat on your own head.
You can achieve the finest effect with 16 Micron wool, but if it's not at hand, 18 Micron wool will also do. Get ready for a relaxed, meditative workflow.
I recommend this course for beginners and advanced alike.
Learning objectives of this sequence:
Besides the basic felting techniques and using and blending of colors I will show you how to cover a curved shape with silk fabric so that silk is placed on both sides of the cap in and out. You can learn how to achieve a loose, pierced nuno-felted surface with the help of the right fulling method. The goal is to get a lightweight but strong felt.
Jour 5 : Dream Hood
Morning 9am-1pm and afternoon 2:30pm-5:30pm:
Create your own featherlight, versatile hood!
Light as a whisper, soft to the touch, with a beautiful drape and rich texture, this hooded cowl with a drawstring is felted from extra fine merino wool and shimmering Pongee silk. It’s designed to be worn over the head for warmth or simply draped around the neck for comfort and style.
If you are looking for a versatile piece that slips easily into your bag and works both as a hood and as a cowl, this is your dream hood. The drawstring adds both a feminine and sporty, youthful look. Wear it around your neck as a scarf, and when the weather turns cold or windy, simply pull the hood over your head.
In this workshop we will create a featherlight hooded cowl with a drawstring, using the Nuno-felting technique. Its lightness comes from the pierced surface pattern. The base is Pongee 05 silk, combined with 16-micron Australian merino wool tops in various colors. With the drawstring, the hood can be adjusted around the face and neck. The cord may be a purchased silk or cotton string, but during the course we will also felt one together.
You will also learn how to achieve a loose, pierced Nuno-felted surface using the proper fulling method, resulting in felt that is both lightweight and strong.
No hat block is needed.
I recommend this course for beginners and advanced alike.
Learning objectives of this sequence:
How to apply the right shrinkage factor
How to cut the Dreamhood shape from a single piece of silk
Nuno-felting with Pongee 05 silk and 16-micron wool
Creating pierced nuno-felt
Special surface design techniques
Choosing and combining colors
Creating a casing for the drawstring
Felting a cord
Basic felting techniques
The right fulling method
Day 6 and 7 : Folded Hat with Pleated Silk Decoration
Morning 9am-1pm and afternoon 2:30pm-5:30pm:
Come and join the course if you would like to make a special light autumn-winter hat decorated with pleated silk.
Learning objectives of this sequence:
In this course, we will make a particularly elegant but light hat, which is suitable for autumn and winter wear.
We will work with 16 Micron Australian merino wool tops, combined with Pongé and Chiffon silk.
We will apply pleated Pongé silk decoration on the lower part of the hat, on the band surrounding the forehead.
The pleats optically widen this band, so even ladies with rounder faces can wear this design with pleasure.
(I note in parentheses that a table top of at least 170 cm long will be needed to make this).
The area above the pleated part is decorated with Chiffon silk strips, which are placed next to each other like a mosaic, thus achieving the graphic design.
After the fulling we will fold and shape the hat and the folds can be fixed with a few stitches after drying.
During the live and interactive sessions you will receive step by step assistance by me on how to create this hat.
I recommend this course to advanced feltmakers.
