The Training
5 days to perfect your practice of Indigo dyeing in the south of France, from July 31 to August 4, 2025, in "Residence" in Montbrun-Bocage, with Yongmei Liu visual artist and textile designer.
General objectives
At the end of this training you will have approached and acquired learning in the field.
Itajamé Shibori folding techniques.
Mokumé textured stitching techniques (Japanese term for a wood texture effect, achieved through the practice of strip embroidery and folding).
Setting up an indigo dye vat.
Educational objectives of this course
Know how to prepare and assemble a vat of indigo.
Knowing how to create pieces to dye with the ancestral techniques of Shibori and Mokumé.
Select and prepare materials suitable for the creative project.
Adapt the Indigo dyeing process to the chosen material and patterns.
Know how to dry and fix.
Detailed program
July 31:
Morning 9am-12:30pm and afternoon 2:30pm-6pm:
Presentation of the Indigo plant, its history.
Presentation and detailed description of the different techniques used during the training.
Discovery of the Itajame Shibori technique and creation on a piece of fabric 50cmX50cm.
Shibori is an ancient Japanese technique of resist dyeing fabrics which allows you to create patterns on the fabric. There are several different Shibori dyeing techniques. Itajime shibori uses shapes to prevent dye from soaking into the fabric. The original technique is made with pieces of wood.
August 1:
Morning 9am-12:30pm and afternoon 2:30pm-6pm:
Discovery of the Mokumé technique and creation on a 50cm 50cm piece of fabric. Flat stitching is done according to the lines of the fabric drawn at regular intervals, and when it is tightened tightly to create irregular folds and dyed, the dye does not penetrate into the part tightened with the thread, and a pattern of streaks like wood grain appears.
August 2:

Finalizing the pieces to be dyed.
August 3:

Dyeing
Preparing the dyeing technique and indigo vat.
Know how to apply dyeing techniques on the Itajamé Shibori piece.
August 4:
Morning 9am-12:30pm and afternoon 2:30pm-6pm:
Know how to apply dyeing techniques on the Mokumé piece.
Debriefing and analysis of the pieces by the trainer.
Monitoring of execution and evaluation methods
Attendance sheets.
Learning is supported by practical demonstrations, one-on-one consultations and illustrated help and explanations.
Training evaluation forms.
Materials available for students
Each participant will benefit from a suitable individual workstation, with individual table adjustable in height and dyeing equipment.
Large light and bright workshop, abundant library specializing in textile art and colors.
A sampling kit of materials to be dyed will be given to each trainee, made up of 100% cotton.
Possibility of purchasing raw materials (wool, textiles, threads) on site if necessary and depending on available stocks.
Level of prior knowledge and prerequisites
This training is suitable for craftsmen and dyers who are beginners or who already have experience in blue dyeing (Pastel or Indigo).
Personal Financing Rate
5-day training course (35 hours): €800.
This price corresponds to 5 days of training and includes the supply of a basic textile kit for sampling.
